2007 Corvette | Rescuing Jet Black Paint | Ceramic Coating | Lafayette, CO

I recently had a beautiful jet black 2007 Corvette C6 in my garage here in Lafayette, and it presented quite the challenge. While the classic lines of this generation are stunning, they were hidden under heavy water spots, swirling, and severe spider webbing, not to mention holograms.

Older GM clear coats are very hard, and this one was no exception. What started out as a standard multi-stage correction quickly evolved into an intensive 24-hour, 6-pass labor of love over three days.

The first couple of stages required a wool pad and a heavy-duty compound—paired with my Menzerna polishes and Flex buffers—just to level, or polish out, the deepest defects. The for the next two passes I used a medium polish to clear out the heavy holograms left behind by the initial compounding. Finally, the finishing passes restored the deep, rich clarity of the black paint.

My philosophy is always centered around defect removal and clear coat preservation rather than chasing an unrealistic illusion of paint perfection. By focusing on "old school" paint correction, I was able to save the clear coat while still achieving an incredible transformation.

To lock in the clarity and protect the finish for the long haul, I applied two layers of a ceramic coating: Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra followed by Gtechniq EXO. The slickness and gloss on this C6 are now absolutely spectacular.
