3-Stage Correction & Ceramic Coating on a 2013 Toyota Camry

Can 13+ Year Old Oxidized Paint Be Saved?

When this 2013 Toyota Camry arrived at our shop, the sun exposure had taken a heavy toll. The hood was completely covered in severe, chalky oxidation—the kind of extreme fading that makes most car owners think a expensive body shop respray is the only option left.

Before committing to a multi-day job, the owner came in for a free consultation and performed a test spot on the hood. Oxidized clear coats can be unpredictable, but after testing our machine polishing pads and compounds, we confirmed the paint had enough remaining depth to safely restore.

The Restoration Process: 3-Stage Correction

To bring back the reflection without burning through the delicate clear coat, we executed a rigorous 3-stage paint correction:

  1. Heavy Cut Stage: Leveling down the dead, oxidized layer of clear coat using heavy-cutting compounds and wool/microfiber pads.

  2. Medium Polishing Stage: Refining the micro-marring left behind by the heavy cut to restore deep color clarity.

  3. Finish Polish Stage: Jeweling the paint to a high-gloss, glass-like shine.

A Note on Paint Restoration: We always remind clients that "paint correction is not paint perfection." Extreme oxidation can leave underlying surface pitting or permanent clear coat damage beneath the haze. However, leveling the surface brings the vehicle back to an unbelievable finish in normal lighting conditions.

Locking In Protection with Gtechniq Ceramic Coatings

Leaving freshly corrected, aged paint unprotected is a recipe for instant fade. To lock in the gloss and shield it against future UV degradation, we applied a dual-layer ceramic coating system:

  • Base Layer: Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra (CSU) – Delivers maximum physical hardness and chemical resistance.

  • Top Coat: Gtechniq EXO – Provides extreme slickness, hydrophobic water-beading, and dirt repellency.

The Final Result & 5-Star Reaction

After 2.5 days of intensive labor, this 15-year-old daily driver looked practically off the showroom floor. The client was blown away by the massive transformation and left us a 5-star review!
